Lynne Tirrell Philosophy, U Mass Boston
At U Mass Boston, we take seriously the university’s responsibility to serve its community, recognizing that we each belong to a variety of communities, and that we bring different gifts to each one. At UMB, I do the standard sorts of service in which all professors who try to be good campus citizens engage, like serving on personnel committees, curriculum development, advising, etc., but I will not list those activities here. I am affiliated with Women’s Studies, the Philosophy and Law Program, and serve on the UMB Faculty Council.
Since 2005 I have served as the Faculty Representative to the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees, the only faculty leadership position that is elected at large across all seven colleges of the University. My job in this role is to represent the UMB faculty at all the Board and committee meetings, and to keep the faculty informed about the Board’s activities. You can read my reports to the Faculty Council in their minutes. In this role, I also serve on the InterCampus Faculty Council, comprised of faculty governance leaders from all five U Mass campuses.
I am also active in several community organizations. Each of the names below is a link to the organization, so you can visit.
Board: Friends of Tubeho, 2008-ongoing
Friends of Tubeho is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization is committed to providing access to education for more than 300 orphans of the Rwandan genocide of 1994 who live together in small houses provided by the association Tubeho in Kigali. “Tubeho” means “let’s live” in Kinyarwanda.
FORGES: Friends of Rwandan Genocide Survivors.
Conference Organizer: “Remembering Rwanda 1994-2009: Genocide and Its Aftermath” a conference commemorating the 15th Anniversary of the Genocide of the Tutsi in Rwanda. U Mass Boston, April 17, 2009. A service of the University to the community. A day-long conference and film screening, organized in conjunction with FORGES (Friends of Rwandan Genocide Survivors), The UMB Philosophy Club, The UMB African Student Union, the UMB Philosophy Department, UMB Political Science, and The John McCormack School of Policy Studies (International Relations MA Program), and the UMB Provost’s Office.

Genres include folks, blues, singer-songwriter, Celtic, afro-pop, bluegrass, and more. They host hundreds of musicians live on-air every year. For me, this is a place where music, fun, cultural preservation and growth, and learning all combine seamlessly. You can listen online at www.wumb.org.
