EEOS 381 - Applications of Geographic Information Systems

Spring, 2008

- Lab 5 -

Objective:

Become familiar with the ESRI Personal Geodatabase data format by completing the Editing GIS Features Tutorial.

Steps:

1. Create a folder on your H: drive named lab5_381

2. Copy into H:\lab5_381 the folder S:\ge381_s08\labs\lab5\lab5.zip

3. Unzip the contents of the zip file into H:\lab5_381.

Complete Exercises 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 in the “Editing_Tutorial.pdf” PDF document, which is located in S:\ge381_s08\ESRI_PDFs.

Notes:
** The tutorial references data in C:\arcgis\ArcTutor\Editor, but you will instead refer to H:\lab5_381 (to access the data, make folder connection, etc.). All your edits will be saved in H:\lab5_381.

** When you open each MXD, go to File > Map Properties and click Data Source Options. Click ‘Store relative path names’ and Click OK, click OK again. Then save your MXD.

** In each MXD you may need to reset the data sources to point to the data you extracted from the zip stored in your H: drive (you will see little red exclamation points in the table of contents). Here is a guide:

Exercises 1 & 2:
StudyArea -- studyarea.shp (at top level of your working folder)
RoadCasings and IndexGrid -- inside the EditorTutorial.gdb (in the IndexArea Feature Dataset)

Exercise 4:
Water, Buildings, and Parcels – inside the EditorTutorial.gdb (in the SimpleEdits Feature Dataset)
New Buildings -- buildings.dxf (polygons; in the EditingFeatures folder)

Exercise 5:
Hydro_region and Hydro_units – inside the TopologyEdits\TopologyTutorial.gdb (in the Watersheds Feature Dataset)
Hillshaded_terrain.sid -- Hillshaded_terrain.sid (in the TopologyEdits folder)

Exercise 6:
IndexGrid and RoadCasings -- inside the EditorTutorial.gdb (in the IndexArea Feature Dataset)
LotLines and StudyRegion -- inside the EditorTutorial.gdb (in the StudyArea Feature Dataset)

** Save your edits and the .mxds as you go along (so if ArcMap crashes, you won’t lose all your work).

When done, create a zip folder named <your_username>_lab5.zip. Add into this zip file the following:
- CreateNewFeatures.mxd

- EditingFeatures.mxd

- MapTopology.mxd

- WorkingWithCAD.mxd

- EditorTutorial.gdb

- studyarea.shp

- TopologyTutorial.gdb

- Hillshaded_terrain.sid

Copy the zip into T:\EEOS_381\381_labs_submit\lab5.

Due on Monday, March 3, 2008.
