EEOS 381 - Applications of Geographic
Information Systems
Spring, 2008
- Labs 8 and 9 -
Objective:
The purpose of these exercises is
to become familiar with the data analysis steps of completing a GIS
project.
The exercises make use of a tutorial that comes with ArcGIS 9.x, in the
PDF document Getting Started
with ArcGIS.
Use the Adobe Acrobat Reader software to view it. The document is
located on the network in S:\ge381_s08\ESRI_PDFs.
Steps:
- Create a lab8_9
folder on your H: drive.
- Read Chapter 4 in the PDF document Getting Started With ArcGIS,
which describes the steps involved in a GIS analysis project.
- Read and follow the steps in Getting Started With ArcGIS,
Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8. In Chapter 5 (pages 79-80), you will copy the ‘project’
and ‘Greenvalley’
folders from S:\ge381_s08\labs\lab8_9
to your lab8_9
folder on your H: drive. This folder, copied to H:, is what you need to
refer to in steps that reference folders on the C: drive (like on pages
83-84).
- Save the map document (on page 120 -- the directions say not to
save)
- You don’t need to follow the instructions on page 121 (chapter
6), as Python is already installed.
- Save all edits and MXDs into the subfolders in your H: drive copy
of the ‘project’
folder, as specified in the steps in the tutorial.
- When done, create a new zip folder named <your_username>_lab8_9.zip
from your entire ‘project’
folder.
- Copy the .zip into T:\EEOS_381\381_labs_submit\lab8_9.
Both labs are
due on Monday, April 14, 2008.
