Basic Lab-ware Glossary

Despite being called glassware, many items used in modern science labs are made of plastic. Most glassware is able to withstand high temperatures, metals too, not all plastics hold up to high heat or extreme cold.

You should always ask if the work you are doing requires specific properties of your labware, to avoid problems. You do not want to crack or melt the items; which could ruin a machine as well as alter your samples.

Flasks

If you are concerned with evaporation, pouring or filtering using a flask is better than a beaker.

Pyrex glass flasks can generally be autoclaved.

Graduated Cylinder
Cylinders are used to measure. Choose one closest to the volume you wish to measure. For example, if you are measuring 80 milliliters use a 100ml cylinder not a 250ml, it is more accurate. They are easily tipped over, do not use for collecting, mixing or storing solutions.
